Naughty or Nice? Acids and Bases
December 1, 2013

Some goldenrod paper, a secret message, and some cabbage juice make for a playful way to teach the concept of acids and bases. And during the holidays you can play it up (of course you're naughty and the child is nice) to check out good behavior. But seriously, have you ever thought about the roles acids and bases play in our daily lives? For example, we preserve foods in vinegar (acid), take an "antacid" when our stomach hurts, and take vitamin C (ascorbic acid) when we feel a cold coming on.  Scientists use the pH scale to measure how acidic or basic a liquid is.
