There’s no time of the year more identified by the distinctive scents of the season than December. Fresh baked cookies, cinnamon apples for latkes and pies, the scents of burning candles, and pine and cedar from the greenery of the Christmas tree all add to the richness of the season.
But it’s also the time of the year when colds and flu (and unfortunately Covid) sometimes diminish our ability to smell. Not only does that stuffy nose make us miserable and take away our ability to smell the wonderful scents, it also reduces our ability to taste as well. Read the Quirkles® book Nosey Nina to learn more about our sense of smell and taste and how they are linked. We definitely should not take our wonderful senses for granted!
Try some of Nosey Nina’s fun activities too. Nosey Nina’s Taste Test emphasizes the link between smell, taste, and sight. Then use cotton balls soaked in peppermint, cinnamon, vanilla, pine, etc. and see if they can be identified when blindfolded. Don’t touch the skin as some students are sensitive to these. (Nosey Nina’s Surprise Scent).
But that’s not all! Make a fun holiday gift by mixing Epsom salt, glycerin, food coloring, and your favorite scent. It’s great for a soak in the tub after a long day of cooking, shopping, or teaching excited children. Watch our video and check out our experiment page for more details.
We also want to take this time to wish you a wonderful holiday season! Thank you for all your support, loyalty, and patronage. We appreciate you!
