Objectives
To observe how crystals are formed
Materials
- Black construction paper
- Scissors
- Lid from large jar
- Measuring cup
- Epsom salt
- Tablespoon
- Wood craft stick for stirring
Procedure
Cut a circle from the black construction paper that will fit inside the jar lid. Place the paper in the lid. Fill the measuring cup with one cup of water and add four tablespoons of Epsom salt to the water. Stir the mixture. Pour a thin layer of the solution into the lid. Allow it to sit undisturbed for one day.
Conclusion
Crystals form on the black paper. The Epsom salt molecules grow closer together as the water slowly evaporates. The salt molecules begin to line up in a pattern and form long crystals. The salt molecules stack together and determine the shape of the crystal.
