Ronnie Rock's Crystals
Objectives
To observe how crystals are formed
Materials
- Black construction paper
- Plastic lid or lid from a large jar
- Measuring cup
- Epsom salt
- Tablespoon
- Wooden craft stick
Procedure
Place the circle of black construction paper inside the plastic lid. Fill the measuring cup with one-fourth cup of water and add three tablespoons of Epsom salt to the water. Stir the mixture. Pour a very thin layer of the solution into the lid. Allow it to sit undisturbed for one day.
Conclusion
Crystals form on the black paper. The Epsom salt molecules grow closer together as the water slowly evaporates. The salt molecules begin to line up in a pattern and form long crystals. The salt molecules stack together and determine the shape of the crystal.
